Voilà! (2023) is a set of beautiful and very Garlandesque viola solos, reflecting a style of writing he has dipped in and out of for almost 50 years. Garland writes about it: “These are four short song-like pieces. Nothing flashy and no special effects or extended techniques; just the music, straight up. This music owes as much to folk traditions as it does to Western classical music. Conservatory-trained musicians (which this music needs) often fail to grasp this.”
