Program Note
Untitled improvisation (2024) [10 minutes] All of the pieces on tonight’s program started from improvisation. This particular set is my current set of improvisation tools that are starting to develop into my next solo work. I played it on the opening set of the Sunday performance of this year’s High Zero Festival of improvisation in Baltimore, MD. With extensive use of circular breathing, it is my first attempt at connecting my sustained drone synthesizer practice with my flute playing. As my skill increases in circular breathing, so does the length of this work. The piece represents a kind of middle state. It is not completely improvised and open, yet not confirmed to paper. It is neither new nor old, but growing.
