Vicki Ray

Piano

Vicki Ray is a pianist, improviser and composer who has been described as “phenomenal and
fearless”. A longtime champion of new music, she has worked with and commissioned and
premiered numerous works from both prominent and emerging composers. As a founding
member of the Piano Spheres concert series, she has been hailed by the Los Angeles Times for “displaying that kind of musical thoroughness and technical panache that puts a composer’s thoughts directly before the listener.” She performs regularly on the Monday Evening Concert series and has been heard in solo roles with the LA Philharmonic, the LA Master Chorale, and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. Ray’s recordings range from Steve Reich’s You Are (Variations) to Wadada Leo Smith’s semi-improvised structures to Morton Feldman’s Crippled Symmetries. Her recording of Cage’s The Ten Thousand Things received a Grammy nomination. Her recording of Lentz’s River of 1,000 Streams—which was named by Alex Ross in The New Yorker as one of the top 20 recordings of 2017—is available from Cold Blue Music.
