Tuesdays @ Monk Space PRESENTS

The Music of Wadada Leo Smith

Co-curated by Shalini Vijayan and Ashley Walters, this concert features a special performance of Wadada Leo Smith’s String Quartet No.17, featuring RedKoral Quartet and the composer himself weaving in and out on trumpet.

Wadada Leo Smith is a celebrated trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and author. Centered on social and cultural issues, his ambitious, genre-defying creative projects are documented in a discography spanning more than 100 albums. Among those recordings is the 4-Album set Ten Freedom Summers, for which Smith was finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music. RedKoral Quartet is comprised of L.A. New Music powerhouses Shalini Vijayan, Mona Tian, Andrew McIntosh, and Ashley Walters, whose experience with Smith’s music include a recording of his first 12 quartets for TUM Records.
