LAYO Contemporary Adventure Ensemble Concert

The Contemporary Adventure Ensemble (CAE), LAYO’s new advanced music ensemble, combines musicians from three distinct communities: current advanced LAYO students, LAYO alums, and professional musicians.

This season, LAYO has partnered with Brightwork newmusic for it’s debut performance on Thursday, May 30 at 7:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica. The ensemble will be performing Copland’s Appalachian Spring as well as Russell Steinberg’s Rucksack, works by Shostakovich, Villa Lobos and more.

Brightwork newmusic is a classical new music sextet based in Los Angeles, California. A flexible and fearless group of world-class musicians, Brightwork consists of piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, percussion (an instrumentation which is often called “Pierrot + percussion,” and which is to modern chamber music what the string quartet was to earlier centuries), and champions the best of the music that’s being written today, while continuing to play the classics of “new” music from the last hundred years.

The Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, comprised of 120 student musicians from over 60 schools throughout greater Los Angeles, is a creative environment where pre-college age musicians, ages 8-18, from every imaginable social, cultural, and economic background come together to rehearse and perform symphonic masterworks and contemporary music. The magic of LAYO is that it attracts both students headed to conservatories and college music programs, as well as students who love music but aspire to other careers.

LAYO is comprised of two ensembles to accommodate different playing levels:

  • Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra for intermediate players
  • Symphony Orchestra for advanced players

Founder and Artistic Director Russell Steinberg takes a holistic approach to music education, so each student learns about the ideas, musical structure, and history behind the notes of each piece. LAYO seeks to develop a passion for music that lasts a lifetime, instilling a sense of pride in all students as they move forward with their chosen endeavors. Many of the orchestra’s alumni have gone on to prestigious universities including Juilliard, Cornell, Berklee College of Music, UCLA, USC, Harvard and New England Conservatory.
