Brightwork Ensemble @ CSUN – Chiaroscuro!

When composer Olivier Messiaen wrote his “Quartet for the End of Time” as a German prisoner during World War II, his choice of instrumentation was limited by the other musicians he met at prison camp. This combination of instruments: piano, cello, violin, and clarinet, has since fascinated composers for their expressive possibilities and wide variations in timbre. Composer Any Akiho takes this to the extreme in his Lost on Chiaroscuro Street, presenting a stark musical contrast between light and dark. Also on the program are works by Aram Khachaturian, Paul Wiancko, Akshaya Avril Tucker, and our own clarinetist Brian Walsh.
