They Sang But Had Nor Human Tunes Nor Words is a chamber work for violin, cello, flute, clarinet, keyboard and percussion–a favorite instrumentation in modern music often referred to as “pierrot + percussion” (alluding to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire). Here, Moe takes the flexible ensemble to new sound worlds, stretching the pitch space with microtones to utilize the space between the traditional 12 pitch classes of western music.
They Sang But Had Nor Human Tunes Nor Words was written for Brightwork newmusic in 2019, and largely composed during a residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
