Robert Creeley Songs for Soprano and Four Players

1981

Program Note

The song-set Robert Creeley Songs (1981) was written during my graduate school days at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Composed for a deliberately heterogeneous ensemble of instruments, each song’s sound is characterized by a particular interval: The Flower (5ths), Hello (7ths), Naughty Boy (4ths), and The Figures (6ths). Heard in the guitar throughout the last song is “Chant e deport” by troubadour Gaucelm Faidit (1180-1206). Mark Saya
