Program Note

This is my musical response to 9:11. It is a lament, but also protest piece, composed well before Powell’s presentation to the UN and Bush/Cheney’s “Shock and Awe” catastrophe—who couldn’t have predicted their response. Commissioned by the brilliant cellist Matt Haimovitz—it is nearly impossible-to-play. The C string’s 9th and 11th harmonics form the classic blues motif.
