Matt Sargent

Matt Sargent is a composer and guitarist based in upstate New York. His music grows out of an appreciation of natural resonances, recursive structures, computer modeling, and outdoor listening.
His music has been described as “a powerfully organic experience” (Paul Muller, Sequenza21) and “so simple and so natural, and yet sets up a complex set of interactions.” (Jennie Gottschalk, SoundExpanse)
His work has recently been heard in concerts and installations at Reykjavik Art Museum, Constellation (Chicago), The Wulf (Los Angeles), Silo City (Buffalo), River Concert Series of the Chesapeake Orchestra (Washington D.C.), Columbia University’s “Reembodied Sound” symposium, I-Park International Artist-In-Residence Program, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, among others. He was a recipient of a 2017 NewMusicUSA grant for a tour and recording of “Unwound Path,” composed for the [Switch~] Ensemble.
In 2018, he released Ghost Music, performed by percussionist Bill Solomon, on Weighter Recordings. His new album, Separation Songs, performed by Eclipse Quartet, is forthcoming on Cold Blue Music in Fall 2019. Also active as a recording engineer, Matt recently recorded and mastered Alvin Lucier’s Ricochet Lady (Black Truffle Records, 2019).
Matt is a visiting assistant professor of electronic music and sound at Bard College.
